The demand for modern energy services, such as for mobility, for air conditioning, or for communication is increasing rapidly. At the same time the recently manifested energy and environmental objectives have been formulated more and more strictly by politicians. Renewable sources of energy play an important role in this context. The achievement of the manifested political objectives requires the utilization of all available sources of renewable energy.

Not only the long-term increase in prices for fossil fuels, the efforts to achieve energy independence and diversification of the raw material base create a certain attractiveness for the use of bioenergy and renewable energy for the production of electrical energy and heat.

The key question is how the individual, the forest owner, the producer of bioenergy fuels, the hydro power generator, the grid manager, the governmental bodies and researcher can contribute to achieving the global targets of emission reduction, resource efficiency and economy in a sustainable manner.

This political plan will - on a grand scale - only succeed if the frame conditions for the energy companies and consumers will soon provide a reliable and effective basis for the required investments. Given the billions of required investments and the aligned restructuring and technological innovations, today’s choices are to be described as historic.
